Hi guys I have never used a sat-phone before and so have no experience.... It is therefore not something that I would usually contemplate taking on a trip although I can see some benefits... But as Fernando states at 5,000m any rescue has to be a self rescue undertaken by the team itself. I am therefore happy to go with other team members decisions re. the use of a sat phone. With regards, to pack weights and amounts of gear... There is nothing worse than carrying a big pack at altitude. Last year we carried full packs with tents, food, etc. to 6,000m on Mercedario and then lighter packs for summit day. I would also agree that we would need to carefully choose minimal personal gear and shared gear, etc. for a traverse. The kit that I would propose to bring to Argentina would be:
I have a SIGG multifuel stove but don't like using fuel stoves and also have a couple of gas stoves, which I prefer to use but obviously it can be hard to obtain gas cartridges in many places. One of the gas stoves I have is an MSR Pocket Rocket ..... Very lightweight and very efficient but uses re-sealable cartridges which are hard to come by. The other stove I have uses standard Camping Gaz propane/butane cartridges. I have just e-mailed a good mountaineering supplies shop in Buenos Aires to ask them a few questions about the avilability of gas cartridges. Andy |
