Hola Fernando, Guillaume and Andy, concerning the Sat-phone I have the same opinion as Fernando. It gives a wrong safety feeling. In case of self-sufficiency everyone forced to take care of his own condition especially his acclimatization. I think this is safer than risking more with the knowledge of a possible rescue after a Sat-phone call. We are now 6 or 7 people - this is the best insurance we can have. And by the way, a Sat-phone also somewhat decreases the adventure of such a tour. Nevertheless it would be funny to call family and friends from the summit of an isolated Puna volcano. My equipment list is similar to Andy's. But I won't bring an ice axe. My tent is a two persons Tatonka Quest and as a stove I bring a MSR Wisperlite. For the orientation I will also bring along a GPS and some satellite maps. If necessary I can buy the German Alpine Club map of Ojos del Salado. It shows also Tres Cruces and Walther Penck and thus the main parts of a Tres Cruces - Walther Penck traverse. Please tell me if we need one? Best regards Robert |
