At 6318 metres Ampato is one of the largest in the chain of three volcanoes which master the landscape of Arequipa.
Ampato went from obscurity to world fame when a mummy was found at its summit. In 1995, a group of archaeologists found a mummified young Inca woman at the summit – in much the same condition as when she was sacrificed 500 years previously. The maiden of Ampato, as she has been called, can be seen displayed in a refrigerated display case in the city museum of Santuarios Andinos Universidad Catolica Santa Maria.
